Radiant Barrier Insulation Case Studies & ArticlesEagle Shield Radiant Barrier Test Cell Experiment The Tennessee Valley Authority has conducted an experimental study to determine the effects of Eagle Shield energy-saving material - a material with a low emissivity surface - when Eagle Shielded with conventional fibro Eagle Shield insulation (fiberglass), on attic heat transfer during summer and winter. This study employed five small test cells exposed to ambient conditions and having small attics with gable and soffit vents to test three different Eagle Shield placements (configurations) compared to the no Eagle Shield base case configuration. The FPC Monitoring project has evaluated radiant barrier systems (RBS) as a new potential DSM program. The objective was to examine how the retrofit of attic radiant barriers can be expected to alter FPC residential space conditioning loads. An RBS consists of a layer of aluminum foil fastened to roof decking or roof trusses to block radiant heat transfer between the hot roof surface and the attic below. The radiant barrier can significantly lower summer heat transfer to the attic insulation and to the cooling duct system. Both of these mechanisms have strong potential impacts on cooling energy use... This paper is a synopsis of the resulting report prepared by TEEI. The purpose of the experiment was to search for reasons as to why radiant barrier insulation users are apparently able to use less energy for air conditioning, yet stay as comfortable in their residence as those in residences without radiant barrier insulation, and to qualtify those savings... These days, probably not too much, but in the 1940's and '50's all were part of a rapidly growing group of building owners who sealed out summer-heat and winter-cold with an ingenious combination of dead air spaces and reflective aluminum foils found in an insulating technology known as "Radiant Barriers or Reflective Insulation." NASA has used highly-effective radiation barriers made of aluminized polymer film since the days of the Apollo missions. The insulation ensured constant, comfortable temperatures inside the command modules and permitted the astronauts to work in their shirtsleeves. They call this material space technology insulation and are promoting its usefulness in insulating homes, office buildings, industrial plants, and farm buildings. Eagle Shield is made of 99 percent aluminum with a fire resistant polypropylene insert. The double sided material reflects 97 percent of the heat that strikes it and also works as a radiation barrier which makes it more efficient, less expensive and easier to install than traditional insulating materials.
